@david@lamatriz.org I am mediterranean (surprise!) and I think you simply misunderstood my point of view, which is not "the focus of posting is broadcasting". The values you and manuel point out are important, I simply don't see (yet) how the technical model behind gnusocial can promote them. For me, reliable control of the *scope* (public/private) of the messages would be more effective. I think we just disagree on the strategy - not on the goals.

Honestly, I still fail to see use cases that could possibly justify the current behavior. The moment you post/reply *publicly*, you are already part of the panopticon, so that's not a good argument imho.

Do you know you can send notices to either people of groups *privately*? Is that what you are looking for? When I send a message publicly, I actually want to reach as many people as possible.

Private communication is an area of gnuosocial that received little attention and should be tested/improved, but my experience is that it works well in private instances.

That's an interesting point of view, but I have the impression you attribute to a technical model (the federation as we know it) a political/social role ("social space of trust") it doesn't have. And I fail to see why following someone should also mean trusting him/her...

I would rather give an "artistic" (rather than political) interpretation, see this old post of mine ;-)
