@infernalturtle both of those cases seem to be asking essentially the same thing, which is "does violence justify violence"? The answer is no. In the second case, since crime means breaking the laws of the state, you have introduced a statist assumption, namely, that crime is immoral. In a non-violent society there can be no violent punishment. Other kinds of punishments may be acceptable as long as people act within their rights. In the first case of self-defense, it requires a much more in-depth analysis, which I currently lack the time to provide, but as a starting point I would say that the act of self-defense is not justified merely by the use of violence by another, rather, it is justified to the minimum extent necessary to protect oneself.
